Ever been alone in a very foreign country? These diary extracts recall the first time I travelled abroad alone, in 1990 to Indonesia as a naive university student... Bemo Corner I arrived in Bali desperate to get off the plane—one of the first—but one of the last to clear customs. Fair is fair. Within seconds of disembarking I was covered in a sheen of sweat that I would wear for the next month. As we drove into Kuta, it quickly became apparent that there was not a scrap of sidewalk unpatrolled by someone trying to sell something. It wasn't long before I hated Kuta. It was not only the heat, but the humanity, that was stifling. I knew that my rest house was on the main road, so I proceeded left down the street until I came to Bemo Corner, the transport hub of Kuta. Now I had a reference point. One gentleman must have followed me for two hundred meters before he finally gave up the sell. "Gal. Gal", he said. "You want gal?" Now innocent as I was back then, I must have looked quite confused. I stared at him dumbly. "W.o.m.a.n", he spelled out. "Nice woman, for you!" I don't remember what I said to him, or if he said anything else to me.
