Internet via T610 + Axim X50v on Vodafone UK

Use your T610 as a GPRS Bluetooth modem paired with an Axim X50v to send and receive SMS and e-mail, browse the Web, receive faxes, update WorldMate weather and currency rates, etc...

Visiting the other PDA platform (first 48 hrs)

Palm or Windows Mobile? I've been firmly in the Palm camp to date, but have just acquired a Pocket PC together with Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. This is not a review of the Dell Axim X50v, but rather a functional comparison with my Palm T3 from the point-of-view of a Mac user. How did a Palm user making a trial transition to Pocket PC fair when pairing the device with Mac OS X? For given applications and functionality, does Palm or Pocket PC have the winning edge? Will he or won't he become a "switcher"? First impressions count, so I decided to document my experiences during the first 48 hours with a Pocket PC. There will be plenty to revisit in subsequent bloggings...

Using Gmail on a Palm T3

An advantage of using Gmail is that you're not tied down to your ISP's mail servers; sometimes these can't be accessed if you're not using your regular network connection. The Palm T3 ships with VersaMail 2.6, which Palm have since neglected to update (for T3 users). Re-purposing photos for e-mail and web display

If you produce high-quality images (e.g. by means of a raw conversion workflow), you may find that they are unsuitable for e-mailing or display on the web as JPEGs in their present form. They may be of a large dimension, high-resolution (e.g. 300 dpi), high bit-depth (i.e. 16 bits/ channel), with an unsafe colour profile (e.g. ProPhoto), not enough compression, and be a bit fuzzy after re-sizing. You could open each individual image that you want to re-purpose in Photoshop and change the pixel dimensions, the resolution (to 72 dpi), the bit depth (to 8 bits), the colour space (to sRGB), the quality (e.g. to 8 cf. 12), and apply sharpening. But there is a much easier way using Photoshop Actions and Automator...

Faxes not spam via Vodafone Mail

Vodafone Mail customers have a combined Inbox facility for e-mail, faxes, and voice mail messages. The usefulness of this facility was limited—until the introduction of e-mail filters—by the inability to avoid spam messages. Sure, you could log in via webmail to view faxes and play back voice mail, but at the expense and irritation of a handful of spam! E-mail filtering allows you to receive those faxes using your usual e-mail client without having to download all the spam as well...
