Google seems to be in a geo-frenzy, with the recent release of Google Latitude, and a Google Earth update that supports GPS receivers (formerly a 'Plus' feature; works with my NMEA-compatible GlobalSat BT-335) plus historical imagery, ocean floor topography, Martian and annotated virtual Earth tours. Now Google Labs offer Location in Signature, the IP-based auto-detection of your Gmail posting location. Not without potential downsides for the dishonest (see example) although it can't tell if you're in the bathroom or lounge; in my testing it had a 16km inaccuracy—making cell signal triangulation on my iPhone 2G seem useful.

Apple Mail in OS X 10.5 insists on adding 'Apple Mail To Do' folders to your IMAP accounts such as Gmail; delete them and they're back on the next sync. Finally someone has figured out a solution that works. Quit Mail and open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist in BBEdit or similar and search for LocalAccount (as AccountType). Copy the string under the uniqueId key. Now search for the NewNoteToDoAccount key and paste over the LocalAccountId string. You can now delete those pesky folders on the server so they won't show up again in Gmail (as Labels) or in Mail on your iPhone when you relaunch desktop Mail.

In the pre-Intel era I used the PhotoToolCM contextual menu plugin to take a selection of JPEG images in the Finder from our digital cameras and quickly resize them to send as e-mail attachments. Here's a way to do the same with Automator. One of the great things about having your photos in iPhoto is the Email button that lets you choose a selection to resize and send as e-mail attachments: Unfortunately it takes some time for my photos to get into iPhoto, since I sort them using Adobe Bridge (part of CS2) and import them to iPhoto after processing. But, as when you've just got back from a holiday, there are times when you want to quickly fire off a few (unprocessed) snaps to friends and/or family. Here is a basic Automator workflow for batch duplicating, renaming, and resizing a selection of JPEG images in a Finder folder (or selected directly on the CF/SD/XD/whatever card mounted on the desktop), ready to be sent as e-mail attachments. Output to the desktop at 25% of the original dimensions is my personal preference: If you choose Save As Plug-in in Automator you can right-click on your image selection to perform the resize action: If you want to use or customize this workflow, you can download it here. Open it, choose Save As Plug-in, name it, choose Plug-in for: Finder then Save.

Once, long ago, being a member of Apple's .Mac seemed like a good idea—even value-for-money. Following the recent Macworld in San Francisco (Jan 2006) I'm left wondering what I'm getting for my money. I use Gmail instead of .Mac for e-mail, because I find it more flexible in use for mail forwarding to and from my domain. I used to make use of Virex, until Apple killed support in recognition that it caused some users more problems than it solved (I now use ClamXav). The .Mac membership area used to make software freebies available (including iBlog); this habit has long since dried up. Occasionally the Pulbic folder on my iDisk sees use as a drop-box, but the only .Mac feature I use regularly is HomePage integration with iPhoto for sharing holiday snaps (although there are excellent free alternatives, such as Galerie). When Mac OS X Tiger was released .Mac users were promised "exclusive" widgets; they never materialised. And now Apple has released iLife 06, together with iWeb, the icing on the cake of disappointment. Apple promotes iWeb as if it's some kind of benefit of a .Mac membership—but it's not. It's not included. whereas it used to cost £70 for a .Mac membership, if you want to enjoy all the features Apple trumpets, it now costs £125 (£70 for .Mac plus £55 for iLife 06). Add your ISP costs to that and you have a fair bit of cash to spend on a more transparent and competitive hosting service. A couple of "first impression" ...

Palm or Windows Mobile? I've been firmly in the Palm camp to date, but have just acquired a Pocket PC together with Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. This is not a review of the Dell Axim X50v, but rather a functional comparison with my Palm T3 from the point-of-view of a Mac user. How did a Palm user making a trial transition to Pocket PC fair when pairing the device with Mac OS X? For given applications and functionality, does Palm or Pocket PC have the winning edge? Will he or won't he become a "switcher"? First impressions count, so I decided to document my experiences during the first 48 hours with a Pocket PC. There will be plenty to revisit in subsequent bloggings... The outgoing Dell Axim X50v Now superseded by the X51v, Dell were having a 20% off clear-out of the previous model, now 1 year old. The hardware is the same aside from double the ROM. Buying direct saved £77 over Expansys (shop around!) and avoided having to fight it out on eBay for a similar price. It cost me less than a Fujitsu Siemens Loox 720 "Grade B" stock which seemed like a similar spec alternative. I chose a "Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition" device because Missing Sync (see below) doesn't yet support Windows Mobile 5.0 (free update pending); Dell has announced that there will be a WM5 upgrade for the X50v (not free), so I have options.
