That's right Ray, PhotoLinker is genetically 'GPSPhotoLinker 2.0' but Jeffrey has added so many new features I guess he felt that a new name (and icon) were in order. With all the code and interface changes the new app is more revolution than evolution, so does justify a fresh start—including developer remuneration.

While I have been playing with the beta I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test drive the release version, but do plan to post a review in the coming weeks (busy time just now!). I was/ am impressed by HoudahGeo 2.0 (review) and as I'm sure I've said elsewhere, it comes down to personal preference and the realization that you're not necessarily forced to always use one or the other (granted, I have been gifted evaluation licenses for both). Think of HoudahGeo and PhotoLinker as like driving a Mercedes or BMW: they both have their unique selling points, they'll both get you there in comfort and safety, but the BMW is arguably more of a driver's car. If you like to engage with the road then BMW/ PhotoLinker may be more your style, but that doesn't mean you can't also covet the Merc ;-)

Bruce,

I just received an email announcing a new, paid version o Photolinker 2. This is by the same author as GPSPhotolinker but is now a paid version as I mentioned and has many new features. I know you are a fan of HoudaGeo and wonder how this new offering compares to that program I happen to own HoudaGeo but the movie he provides shows some pretty neat additions and changes to GPSPhotolinker. The author indicates he will still offer GPSPhotolinker for free.

HoudahGeo is about to hit 2.0 - major, yet free upgrade. Beta versions are currently available on macdeveloper.net

HoudahGeo 2.0 now exposes settings for configuring the automatic geocoding algorithm. It also add automatic waypoint geocoding.

Reverse geocoding now offers a choice between GeoNames.org and Google Maps.

@Bruce. I'm indeed loving Houda. While I'm always willing to pay for software I won't say no to a good deal. In regards to TrialPay I signed up for a free 7 day trial for a co-marketed music service. Once I got the Houda license I simply unsubscribed from the music service before the 7 day term. Total expense for me 0. In fact it got me 25 free tracks of music too and might even subscribe to that service in the future.

@ Thomas, I don't think you'll be disappointed by HoudaGeo. But I do take exception to these TrailPay claims of "free" software. You do not get something for nothing, as in "no purchase required". As I understand it these apps are available "at no extra cost" if you buy or subscribe to one of the co-marketed products. That's a not-so-subtle difference.

I felt sorta guilty for pusing HoudahGeo so I checked out PhotoGSPEditor. And lo and behold, they also have a TrialPay checkout.

So now, for all intents and purposes, we're looking at 4 pieces of free software

Hi there. Loved your post, as well as the other one which led me here.

I just wanted to point out that there is a way to get HoudahGeo for free - and yes it is legal. Check the HoudaGeo website for the TrialPay deal to find out how it works. Since I don't have a GPS tracker the only way for me to geocode my images is to use a map of some sort. As you noted, software for Mac is pretty scarce in this area so I've come to rely on this solution in my workflow and it's pretty easy to do.

In which mode you can do this?

See here Rudolf, or p.15 in the User Guide (not well explained); in Mode 3 a little flag symbol will briefly flash on-screen to indicate a waypoint has been recorded. You can actually be recording a track log at the same time, then change to Mode 3 and record waypoints as well.
