Leopard third-party application compatibility

Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) is in the wild, as the media are fond of saying. While there may be few truly "new" features (Apple posted a creative list of 300+), it certainly does look as if the update refines the Mac OS X experience. I'd enjoy such refinements as proper support for UVC cameras, and double-clicking events in iCal to edit their properties—but not at the cost of being unable to run some of my third-party applications. Information on third-party application compatibility with Leopard is hard to come by. By trawling support forums, e-mailing developers, reviewing release notes, reading press releases, browsing developer and user blogs, searching FAQs, etc. I found that Leopard is one kitty that won't always play nice on my Mac.

Here's what I found for the third-party apps currently installed on my Mac, where [Y] = fully compatible; [X] = partial or incompatibility; [?] = unknown compatibility. Remember, I don't have Leopard: this list is based on research:

[Y] Address Book Dates 1.2.3

[Y] Adobe Photoshop CS3 10.0

[Y] AppZapper 1.8.0

[Y] BBEdit 8.7

[?] Vine Server for OS X 2.2

[Y] VLC 0.8.6c

[Y] Wacom Tablet 6.05-2(RC)

[Y] xScope 1.5

I'll try to keep this list up-to-date. Please feel free to help—especially if you have Leopard experience! For me the most critical issue will be support for my multifunction printer software. In a way I'm grateful this isn't available yet, since it forces me to wait a while—allowing all the early adopters to find and suffer the bugs. Bring on 10.5.1!

Bruce, I like your little check box icons in this list. Are you doing this with CSS? I prefer CyberDuck for 'FTP'. It's not quite ready for Leopard either, but very close.

    That's right, CSS Rob e.g. .question {display: block; padding: 2px 0 2px 20px; background: url(bioneural/help.png) left center no-repeat;}

Originally I had just the icon and no text i.e. [Y] etc., but realised it would be a meaningless list in feed readers void of my CSS.

P.S. Something weird going on with my comments e.g. your "FTP" was converted to a hyperlink and I have no idea why this happens. The other day BOK's comment got screwed up because it contained an apostrophe.

    Here's what I know:

Chicken of the VNC - Not needed. Leopard screen sharing is VNC and can be used with any VNC client.
Flip4Mac - Works for me in both Safari and Quicktime. I have no complaints.
Logitech Control Center - LCC has always sucked. I recommend SteerMouse. It's not free, but works a heck of a lot better.
Perian - Works for me in both Quicktime and Quick View. Not sure why people say it doesn't work.
RealPlayer - No personal experience, but I've seen this in a few people's Leopard dock.
The Unarchiver - Yet another works for me.
Transmit - Even more works for me. I use Transmit pretty heavily and haven't found anything not working yet.

Hope this helps fill in your list.

That's great Ron. Many thanks, especialy for the tip re SteerMouse.

You know what I love about CyberDuck over every other FT P (there, Bruce, did that fool your auto-linkage bug? :) ) client for the Mac? It has filetype sorting. I cannot stand sorting a directory/file list by any other means. Especially if the directory has lots and lots of files.

We have a site up at LeopardBugs.com that is compiling (un)working applications and bugs with the OS. Most of these apps are already on there, but feel free to browse through and add anything you find.

I myself use MacTheRipper fairly frequently, and am myself a Leopard 10.5.1 user.

    No complaints so far.
