I had intended to look up some advice on how to shoot fireworks, but I ran out of time. The display is an annual event, with rockets launched from barges on the harbour. It was scheduled for the evening before Guy Fawkes Day, which is celebrated in New Zealand for no good reason I know of. The premature timing was apparently out of consideration for various cultural events; even the start time was coordinated with the interval of a concert taking place concurrently in the nearby Michael Fowler Centre. This image (like most I took) used manual focus set to infinity and a 2-second shutter. The shutter speed was a guess, trying to ensure enough light without capturing too much motion. Using the self-timer may have helped reduce camera shake, but did mean I got a fair share of pictures showing nothing much but dark sky in between explosions. The wind was quite strong as is typical in the Windy City, so a tripod more substantial than the one I used could have been useful. If you have any experience shooting fireworks please share your tips.
