Can't you just use the WP plugin for this? Pretty painless.

I guess it's automated, granted that's good, but Shorty is a manual method of re-directing any URL such as those long strings that sometimes end up in your browser address bar. Different tool for a different job—but I imagine they could make quite a pair.
That is true. It's very limited. I copied the source and updated it for WP 2.x.
