I've got three and a half thousand photos in iPhoto now, despite being a little behind in my RAW conversions. That's a lot of photos to enjoy, and my wife and I do just that whenever the screen saver kicks in on our computers. Some of them are, in my humble opinion, worth sharing. While I have no pretension to anything resembling a professional photographer, I consider myself an enthusiastic amateur on the lookout to improve my technique. And so I present a new feature on bioneural.net—IOTW (Image of the Week-ish). I get to brush off the digital dust and share images I enjoy, and you get to critique my effort.
The first IOTW I'd like to present is of the lighthouse at Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. It was taken in November 2005 on the evening tide:

My notes
I like water—particularly reflective water. The symmetry in reflections invokes the suggestion of design, whether the object being reflected is man-made or not. Highlights can be a problem when shooting water, and I usually carry a circular polarizer to cope with this. Images shot with polarizers tend to resemble what you see if wearing sunglasses, so maybe there's is some form of subliminal "feel good" message going on here that reminds the viewer of warm summer days? In this shot, however, the warmth is mainly from the yellow glow of a low November sun; evening is my favourite time for photography (since I find mornings somewhat more challenging to witness). I crouched low for this shot to maximize the reflection, and to deviate from the usual head-height perspective that most happy-snappers capture.
Your notes
This is the "audience participation" part. Do you have an opinion? De-lurk and share it. You might want to discuss composition, exposure, Photoshop technique, the subject of the photo, etc. If you do or don't like it, explain why. Thanks, in anticipation, for imparting your thoughts.

Nice implementation of Lightbox, Bruce! Is this a special version or your own styling? Oh, nic pic too. ;)
iRob, it's not LightBox it's iBox. Having problems making it work on a WinBox, iThink perhaps there may be a conflict with some other JS I'm using. I know LightBox had issues with K2.
Nice composition with the reflection of the lighthuse in the wet sand.
And I like the fact that you've kept the EXIF in the file.
Whitby... been there in 1989. Do you have any pictures of the cliff with the church on it?
Hi BOK. I hadn't realised the EXIF data were still present. I had wondered about posting this as part of the description, but decided to keep the focus on the image. I do have a couple of shots of the Abbey on the hill, but nothing spectacular. Did you try the fish-and-chips? Always smell better than they taste ;-)
Well, the Abbey is spectacular by itself IMHO.
And talking about that fish-and-chips: I did try them and remember them as being very greasy! :-P
The co-incidence: while I was commenting on your picture, a Whitby-vessel anchored in my hometown next to our home (something with Turku in its name)...
