Over a decade ago in New Zealand I had the privilege of working with a Scottish physician by the name of Richard Rankin. I learned much from him, and find myself repeating three of his sayings in my own practice...
I don't know if Dr. Rankin is still practicing medicine, and I can't be sure that I've quoted him accurately. I can't say if he originated these words, or took them from elsewhere. I am sure, however, that they contain much wisdom (OK, maybe not the third, but it is amusing!):
- You learn something new every day—but you still die stupid.
- The purpose of medicine is to entertain the patient while nature takes its course.
- You are born with a certain number of heartbeats—and exercise only uses them up faster.
