Do you like to be organized and keep a checklist of things to pack when you go on holiday? No checklist can serve everyone or every trip, but a comprehensive generic list can be useful for making sure you don't miss anything important. It doesn't oblige you to pack everything on it! Here is mine; what have I missed off?
