Mobile comms on a Palm T3 using Vodafone Mail

You can use the built-in apps on your Palm T3 to send, receive and view faxes, to send and receive e-mail, and to retrieve voicemail messages...

What kit did I use?

  • A Vodafone UK Pay-As-You-Talk account enabled for GPRS
  • A Sony Ericsson T610 mobile phone
  • A PalmOne Tungsten T3 handheld with a SD Card inserted
  • Web access from a Mac to sign up to Vodafone Mail
  • A D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter

Register for Vodafone Mail

Vodafone Mail provides a single mailbox for managing voicemail, e-mail, and faxes. Once set up you can access this mailbox using your Mac via the web, using your GPRS phone, or your Palm handheld using the T610 as a Bluetooth modem. There is no subscription or set-up fee; you pay as you go:

http://www.vodafone.net/

Make a note of your Vodafone Mail e-mail address, username, password, and fax number.

Tip: Make sure people send faxes to your fax number, not your mobile number.

Pair your T3 and T610 for Internet access

Click Done to finish the wizard.

Having activated Bluetooth on both the T3 and T610, use VersaMail to send and receive e-mail. E-mail arrives in your inbox as normal; voice and fax messages are clearly identified as such in the Subject header, while the From header shows the phone number of the person who left the voicemail/ sent the fax:

How do I view a fax on my Palm?

Faxes are downloaded as .tif file attachments. Once you have fully retrieved the fax (just the headers are initially downloaded by default) click on the paperclip attachment icon and then click Save to Card:

fax_attachment

Note that you can view TIFF images using the Photos Palm application, but these are not viewable at full size so will likely be unreadable.

Extend the Palm's screen to its full extend and put it in landscape mode with the softkey area hidden.

Open WebPro and from the Options menu choose Normal View.

From the Page menu chose Open From Card...

Look for your fax in the DCIM folder as Untitled.jpg; click OK to open it.

Remember this may be an A4 page so it will take a little while to format. Move around the fax using the scroll bars or click-and-drag on the fax image itself using the stylus:

How can I get the fax from Palm to Mac?

Option 1: You can transfer saved faxes from the SD Card to your Mac, via an SD Card reader (see here).

Option 2: In VersaMail, instead of choosing Save To Card chose View with Photos as the Viewer app, and the fax image will be transfered to the Palm's internal memory where it can be viewed (not at actual size) in the Photos app. Use the menu option Photo > Send Photo to send the fax via Bluetooth to your Mac.

Option 3: Use BeamPRO on the Palm to "beam anything anywhere", including faxes and other files saved to your SD Card. Open the Palm app, check the box next to the file or files you want to send, and it will arrive in your Mac OS X Documents folder:

How do I play a voicemail message on my Palm?

Voicemails are downloaded as .wav file attachments. Once you have fully retrieved the message (just the headers are initially downloaded by default) click on the paperclip attachment icon and then Play from within VersaMail using MMWave (a component of VersaMail) as the Viewer:

How can I get voicemail from Palm to Mac?

Option 1: Once you have fully retrieved the message click on the paperclip attachment icon and then click Save to Card. You can then transfer saved voicemail from the SD Card to your Mac, via an SD Card reader as above.

Option 2: Because you can't open these .wav files with the Palm Voice Mail app (the format is incompatible), you cannot use the Send V Memo option in that app to send the memo via Bluetooth to your Mac.

Option 3: Use BeamPRO on the Palm as above. Look for a file on your SD Card named AggAudio.wav.

Send a fax

You can use the Palm application SMS to send an SMS message to a fax machine simply by prefixing the fax number with 9741.

sms

In the above screen shot I have saved a draft message as a template used to generate fax headers.

  • [Number] Replace this with the fax number to which you wish to send the fax
  • [Subject] Replace this with the subject of your fax
  • [To] Replace this with the name of the person to whom the fax is addressed
  • [From] Replace this with your name/ the name of the sender
  • [Message] Replace this with the body of your fax message
