Pairing a Siemens S55 & Palm on Vodafone UK

So you have a Siemens S55 on Vodafone UK, enabled for GPRS and Bluetooth. Just use the Phone Link app on the Palm T3 and you'll have them talking the same language in no time, right? Err, no actually...

Using Phone Link to choose the pre-configured Vodafone UK GPRS option (Network Service), and a Bluetooth connection to your S55 (Phone Connection) doesn't work—assuming you have correctly enabled GPRS on the S55 and Bluetooth on both devices.

Pasted Graphic 2-1

The following "how to" is courtesy of Vodafone UK Customer Care. The Palm instructions are for an OS 4 device I think, but they still make sense on the T3 under OS 5. I was able to establish an Internet connection by manually setting the "Bt to Siemens S55" (for Bluetooth) and the "Ir to Siemens S55" (for infrared) connection settings (as pre-configured on the Palm, as an alternative to "IR to Phone" as below). The Siemens instructions are likewise for the SL55, but the menu structure seems identical to that of the S55:

The Palm side

  • Tap the Home icon (the round icon at the bottom of the screen with a house on a white background).
  • Tap the downwards-pointing arrow in the top-right of the screen and select All from the drop-down list.
  • Tap on the Prefs icon. This will bring up the Preferences screen.
  • Tap the downwards-pointing arrow in the top-right of the screen and select Network from the drop-down list.
  • Tap Preferences (top-left of screen).
  • Tap on the field to the right of Service and enter Internet (use upper- or lower-case).
  • Tap on the field to the right of User Name and enter web (in lower-case).
  • Tap on the field to the right of Password. This will bring up a password screen. Enter web (in lower-case).
  • Tap OK to return to the Preferences screen. It should now read -Assigned- alongside Password.
  • Tap on the down-arrow to the right of Connection and select IR to Phone. A field will appear labelled (Phone). Tap on Tap to Enter Phone.
  • Next to Phone #, enter *99#.
  • Leave the three boxes un-ticked.
  • Tap OK to return to Preferences.
  • Tap Details. This will bring up the Details screen.
  • Tap on the down-arrow to the right of Connection Type and select PPP.
  • Tap on the down-arrow to the right of Idle Timeout and select Never.
  • Leave the box next to Query DNS ticked.
  • Tap on Script (bottom of screen). This will bring up the Log in Script screen.
  • Tap the down-arrow next to End and select Send.
  • Enter ATZ (upper-case).
  • Tap the down-arrow next to End and select Send CR.
  • Tap the down-arrow next to End and select Send. Enter the following text, ensuring that all punctuation marks are entered and no spaces are left: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
  • Tap the down-arrow next to End and select Send CR.
  • Send ATZ
    Send CR
    Send at+cgdcont+1,"ip","internet"
    Send CR
    End
  • Tap OK to return to the Details screen.
  • Tap OK to return to the Preferences screen.
